Dolly Parton's Imagination Library

Reading to a child everyday for 20 minutes is one of the most powerful ways to assure a child will be ready to be successful upon entering school and throughout their lives.  Pre-school children ages birth to five years old living within the Lake Stevens School District boundary are eligible to register to receive a free age appropriate book mailed each month until their 5th birthday.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a wonderful gift to children. In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort to benefit the children of her home county in east Tennessee. Dolly wanted to foster a love of reading among her county's preschool children and their families. She wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family's income. She mailed a  new, age appropriate book each month to every child under 5 in Sevier County.  The first book every child receives is The Little Engine That Could and when they turn 5 and graduate, the book is about starting Kindergarten.   Since 1996, the Dollywood Foundation has mailed over 12 million books to pre-school children. In 2001, she offered other communities the opportunity to have the program.

In 2008,  United Way of Snohomish County and the Lake Stevens Education Foundation  partnered to sponsor the program in  Lake Stevens. Through donations from individuals, local service groups, local businesses and Boeing, we are meeting our goal to gift all children from birth to five years old living within the Lake Stevens School District their own Imagination Library!  Since 2008, 1898 children in Lake Stevens have or are participating.

Please Note:

We are temporarily holding off on new registrations while we seek other funding.   Boeing/UWSC will no longer be funding the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, while we seek new funding sources; our Lake Stevens Education Foundation/ABC is dedicated to maintaining this valuable program in our community.
